An experience provided by Eugenia Sivitou.
The early morning atmosphere is cool and crisp, even in the middle of summer in this part of Crete, where the mountains meet the turquoise sea, creating a dramatic scenery. As the sun prepares to show its face behind the mountains, a rooster’s call and the sheeps bleating draw me out of bed. I feel the urge to greet the day with a quick dip in the sea.
After the swim, I sit by the shore for a few minutes and feel the first morning rays warming my skin, while listening to the waves lapping softly.
It is time for class. Back at the house, on the yoga deck among the olive trees, I roll out a mat. My body feels awake after the swim and walk up from the beach, and my sensations are heightened. I place one foot on the mat. Then the other.
Tadasana. Mountain pose. Body tall, proud, still like a mountain.
Bringing my awareness inward, I connect with the breath. The outbreath makes space for a complete, satisfying, delicious inbreath. The fresh morning air softly caresses the lungs and cleanses the body inside out. Breath free like the wind.
The mind has transitioned from sleep to being fully aware, although quiet, as the first thoughts start leaving their trails on its canvas. Mind open like the wide, blue sky, transparent, without even a single cloud in sight, no thought concrete enough to stain it.
I express gratitude for the gift of this new day, this healthy able body, the breath tirelessly moving so that I can flow with life. I express gratitude for the practice of yoga that I have been taught, through which I can fine tune my awareness and skillfully navigate towards living a more fulfilling and joyful life, for all the teachers that have come before me. I express gratitude for this beautiful space I have been blessed with where souls can meet, hearts can soften and let go of fears, anxieties and stresses of everyday life, and where the knowledge of priceless practices can be shared.
